I've been interested in book design for a long time. My design yen was one of my principle reasons for starting Big Game Books! Not only do I get to publish work I believe in, but I get to design oodles of covers as well....57 in all, so far!

My favorite sources for design are ephemera - old foreign stamps and textile patterns in particular. I also like to paint, print, and draw cover art, and to base designs off typographical elements. I rarely work with photographs unless I take them myself, or can manipulate the heck out of them, although some of the earlier tinyside covers relied on photos.

If you'd like to take a gander at the covers of the tinysides, they're all right here.

In addition to doing the design work for Big Game Books, I also do freelance designwork for other publishers. I have designed broadsides for the Best American Poetry Series, book covers for No Tell Books, and I'm working on the cover for the forthcoming Outside Voices Anthology of Younger Poets.

Of course, some of my favorite designs are the ones that don't get chosen! Click here for a little slideshow of covers that never were.
