Did anybody else see Craft Corner Deathmatch on Wednesday? I did. While knitting. Heh.

The latest kerfuffle: this article on poet Ammiel Alcalay. There's a rising tide of blog posts, letters-to-the-editor, etc. coming out of this one, arguing that the article is nothing more than a crass call for censorship, is hyperbolically one-sided, fails to appreciate political and poetical complexity, etc., etc. Perhaps. But its main fault in my view is that . . . it's boring. I mean, the mindblowing revelation that this author feels the need to gift the world with is: "poets sometimes have unpopular, and to some people's minds, perverse, political views." Egad! You don't say! You know what else? The world is round.

"There is no place for such things in our life!," sayeth this random Russian propaganda poster, solemnly inveighing against the diverse terrors of cigarette-pack-shaped man bags, liquorbottle peglegs, outsized hypodermic needles used as flagpoles, and, um, buccaneers.

You know what? Painting over a run in your pantyhose with nail polish to keep it from getting bigger really works.

If you're looking for something to do this evening that will get you fed and cultured all at once, try the Feast Reading at Camaje (85 MacDougal Street between Houston and Bleecker) at five o'clock. Jen Knox, Shafer Hall, Jordan Davis, and sundry others will be reading post-Oscar poems. Fastiness requires my absence, but those of you not burdened with religious obligations can zealously dine while listening to what promises to be some very awesome work.
